Adobe Photoshop Elements
Photoshop Elements can be used to process and edit still and video images. It has the same powerful editing tools as the full-featured application. However, it has limits and different features, so the learning curve is steeper for Elements. You can import or load images in both versions, but only the full-featured application supports opening or saving file formats other than JPEG.
I show you how to use Photoshop Elements because many consider it an easy-to-use and more familiar editor for beginners. More advanced editing and image-editing features are available in both applications.
Along with the basic and advanced features of these programs, I also include an introduction to the web services and online support that are available.
Photoshop
Photoshop is the number one image-editing software in the world. It is usually more expensive than Elements, and it lacks some of the more beginner-oriented tools.
Photoshop is commonly known as the standard for editing photos and graphics. I also include general features of Photoshop that you can use to begin working on other media such as photos, scanned artwork, and graphics. Photoshop also works with video; however, I cover that in more detail in the sections later in this chapter.
Adjustments
The tools and adjustments in Photoshop have specific names and concepts that make them easier to understand. However, a little bit of background in the programming concept of variables can help your understanding of how Photoshop works. You’re not likely to need this background until you start performing more advanced tasks in Photoshop.
All the tools in the Adjustments panel can be applied to the image as a whole. Because these tools are related to effects applied to the whole image, they’re often called Adjustment tools. However, they can be used to create layer masks or pixels within a layer to alter a portion of the image. I provide more details about Adjustment tools in Chapter 18.
Using the Layers palette

Reading the wrong input data from an I2C device in Atmel Studio 6
I have a device which outputs data on GPIO 0 (LED off) when the I2C clock is applied to GPIO 14. This works perfectly. I am using Atmel Studio 6 to read data from this device and therefore I need to define my I2C configuration. The datasheet for the device is shown here:
