HOW TO SAVE A STYLE: Photoshopping is a great thing, because you can’t really go wrong with a good image, and you can make hundreds of them! The problem is, you usually end up with a lot of images. If you don’t really know how to save an image, then you end up saving too many, and you don’t have the time to edit those images. Luckily, if you’re like the average photographer and start overthinking every image, you can always use the Save for Web & Devices feature.
This feature lets you create custom image sizes such as Web or mobile, so you can save a JPG (or other format) version and a lossless PNG for the background. It also lets you create Image Intents, which are image types that mean different things. You can create custom ones for flash versus JPEG and so on.
The following sections explain these features of Photoshop.
Resizing images and graphics
Photoshop’s resizing options are somewhat limited: You can resize them within their native resolution, but you can’t change the resolution without creating a whole new image file. Often, you want to do this if you want to scale an image to a smaller, more appropriate size to fit something in a particular spot. Also, a lot of the time, you want to resize an image so that it fits somewhere on a website in a specific space, such as a sidebar or a bigger image.
You can change a lot of different aspects of an image when resizing. You can change the aspect ratio, the amount of cropping, the resolution, and the color. You can also make more specialized changes, such as changing the white and black levels of the image and changing the gamma.
It’s important to note that if you are copying a highly detailed image from a magazine, it may have a resolution that is too high. This action is especially true for high-end magazines like Vanity Fair and Wired. The best way to avoid this dilemma is to print out the magazine and then use a graphics program to copy the images.
To change an image’s size, choose Image⇒Canvas Size (or press the keyboard shortcut Shift+Ctrl+I) to open the Canvas Size dialog box, shown in Figure 11-1. The Canvas Size dialog box features a number of options for resizing a given image.

The drug, developed by Jonathan Nelson and Lidia Straneo, the two young researchers who discovered that abacavir is the active ingredient in the AIDS drug Truvada, is being tested in patients with a type of cancer called hepatocellular carcinoma, or HCC. The treatment, called DCV3000, effectively erases some of the internal organs in cancer patients from the infection and prevents the cancerous cells from spreading.
“I will be surprised if we don’t have some positive activity,” Dr. Peter Gottesman, director of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the study’s principal investigator, told TPM. “If it does work in this HCC study, we will have a potent new treatment for HCC.”
The study, which has completed enrollment and has seen positive preliminary results, just released its first results. But in a coincidence that can only be described as remarkable, the researchers found that patients receiving DCV3000 also showed dramatic improvement in their HCC infections and that their viral loads were so low that they had to be monitored every two weeks to ensure the lack of an active viral infection.
This might sound like good news for the HCC patients — especially since it means that we might be able to infect this bacteria with a virus that’s been carefully engineered to kill cancerous cells and thus, significantly limiting the side effects of the new drug. But in this case, it’s actually not so great news for the patients since their cancer is all but eradicated.
So the side effects of the drug can kill off the infection, but the HCC infection can kill off the patients’ tumors, which will require total remissions to cure.
Meanwhile, Gottesman told TPM that they have already tested this drug on mice infected with HIV, and found that it can eliminate the infection from every cell in the mouse. “The preliminary data looks very encouraging,” he said. “So far, we’ve tested three patients, and the drug was effective.”
